Current revision

The most common way to decrease energy consumption of peripherals is by <powering them down>. Another way is by making sure the peripherals are used in the most effective way. A way to do this is by exploiting specific properties and characteristics of the peripheral. A device driver is most often responsible for behavior of peripherals, but using a peripheral in an optimal way is partially limited by application software.

Implementations

A specific case where an application was designed to save energy on peripherals is Blackle.com. The black background can be displayed at the cost of less energy by CRT monitors. On LCD monitors this is not true, but the idea remains interesting.
