Description

Data 2 Documents (D2D) is a vocabulary for constructing ‘documents’ out of ‘data’. It does so by breaking down web documents into a recursive hierarchy of small identifiable pieces of content that as such become a resource in the web of data. Hence, it helps bride the gap between the ‘Web of Documents’ and the ‘Web of Data’. The vocabulary has a strong relation with semantic elements in HTML5 and allows for a declarative form of content management expressed in RDF. Furthermore, it facilitates easy publication of existing Linked Data in web documents and provides a novel way of sharing complex content between web documents, e.g. as in syndication.

How can Data 2 Documents be used to create a cultural heritage website that combines digital collection data from multiple sources, e.g. Rijksmuseum, the BiographyNet project, Amsterdam Museum, DBpedia and others? The site has to provide a mash up of data from multiple sources, exploiting possible links between entities, allowing users to explore cultural heritage around specific concepts without being bound by a specific collection. The project will investigate to what extend such a site can be build in a ‘rapid application development fashion’ within the limited time span of the MSc project, using the new Data 2 Documents architecture.

The student has to have knowledge of HTML. Basic knowledge of RDF/Linked Data and SPARQL would be helpful but is not required, as long as the student is eager to learn about these concepts.
