The research proposed in this thesis design is to build a crowdsourcing app in a large scale social network to convert unstructured historical content into linked open data. Linked Open Data is supported by mature Web-based technologies. These technologies are free and highly standardised, which will ensure an accelerated growth of a Linked Data Web. Much potentially useful data however today is locked on written paper. For example, governments in the Sahel region have recorded 1000s of pages of data about rainfall in their region. This data could be fruitfully combined with socio-agricultural data to support decisions in the re-greening initiatives. Building a crowd-sourcing App in this project, we intend to help extend the Web benefits of the knowledge society and economy to people in rural communities in Africa.

The research will focus on using the African Diaspora to digitalize documents in the technologically less privileged Sahel Region applying crowdsourcing techniques which is mainly utilized in the technologically developed world. Furthermore, the project will provide a well-documented practice that can be implemented or extended further.

At the completion of the project, we aim to successfully publish thousands of climate related data from Sahel region in to Linked Open Data accessible and usable throughout the World Wide Web.
