About Hotspots of Change in Brain Metabolism during Parkinson’s Disease


The aim of the project is to discover ‘hotspots’ of change in brain metabolism during progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD). PD is one of the most common types of neurodegenerative diseases and has a significant metabolic component.

To investigate brain metabolism in PD we determine ‘reporter metabolites’ in the metabolic network. To this end we use bioinformatics methods to analyze changes in gene expression in PD. Our group has been working on computational models of the human metabolic network, especially on brain metabolism.

Job description

We are looking for a bioinformatics student for this project. We are working closely with a research group on PD within the VU University Medical Centre.


Interest to learn metabolic pathway analysis and modeling of biological networks. Programming and analytical skills are necessary. The project will include collaboration with a medical research group, and communication and collaborative skills are important.
