Abstract

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) such as World of Warcraft and Runescape are a new type of Internet-based application with millions of players. Assuming the player community continues its exponential growth, there will be over 60,000,000 players by 2012. Will current technology be able to scale? To answer this question, there is a need for a realistic environment for the study of MMORPGs. The goal of this M.Sc. project is to understand the needs of such an environment, then to build and test it. Achieving this goal requires a multi-disciplinary approach that combines technical skills with knowledge about virtual worlds, distributed systems, and general computer modeling and simulation.
