As a sea-faring nation, a large portion of Dutch history is found on the water. Much of the (digitized) historical source material is scattered across many databases and archives. In the Dutch Ships and Sailors we bring together maritime historical data from different sources using Linked Data principles.
In this project, we will aim to develop a method to identify the same ship or captain across these heterogeneous resources. Due to the lack of unique identifiers in the original data, it is very hard to “follow” a ship across different data sets and through time. By using machine learning techniques we aim to construct a list of same-as relations between ships or captains that can be used in the Dutch Ships and Sailors Linked Data Cloud.
