About Simplified visualisation of proteins

Description

Background

Coarse-grained model of a protein

Several programs give a simplified view of the protein backbone, showing it in cartoon like ribbons. A simplified view of the side chains is however not well established.

What needs to be done

Come up with a creative idea to simplify the view of the side chains so that it is clear in which direction they are pointing, without obstructing the overall view. It would be possible to extend this project into a rotamer simulation, which would require some programming in C++.

Requirements

  • creativity and a strong eye for visual representations
  • understanding of the PDB file format, and some protein viewers
  • c++ programming skills if you would like to extend the project into a simulation
